Ashley is a two-time Ovation Award winner, earning awards for Outstanding Work Behind the Scenes in 2012, and the coveted Long-time Contribution Award for 2024.
He has been creating new musical theatre since 1998, when Beyond the Meadow premiered in concert form at the Arts Club Theater. He has created and produced Rumpelstiltskin's Children, Beautiful, In Pursuit of Porridge, and Lucia, in addition to dozens of scripted musicals devised for Vancouver's Broadway Chorus and, recently, remounted by Penticton's Showtime! Community Theatre. He's especially delighted that the Broadway Chorus participated in the revival production of Beyond the Meadow, the show that started it all, for its 25th anniversary revival.
He's also a performer, starting age 6 as one of the many children who lived in a shoe. Since then he's performed with several Lower Mainland theatre troupes, including Metro, Footlight, Fabulist, Applause, Freddy Wood, and more. He's played John Jasper from The Mystery of Edwin Drood twice, and Prince Charming three times, but his favourite role was Jack in Into the Woods, because it was Into the Woods.
Otherwise Ashley is a senior institutional researcher at UBC's PAIR Office; he volunteers as a guide at VanDusen Botanical Gardens, practices intermediate Japanese, and maintains the humorous knitting blog www.unclestashley.com.
